For instruments in complex surroundings the simplicity, and clear interface design, with elements and interactional patterns which are easy to distinguish is a big benefit: It helps to reduce the mental load, and supports concentration on complex content. All attention may stay focused on the experiments, and no distraction is happening, when an interface is intuitively understandable.
The 2003 completed interface for autoMACS is a good example of a long creation work, many iterations, and a really nice and friendly interface.
